Knight First Amendment Institute
Case Statement Brochure
The Knight First Amendment Institute (KFAI) serves to promote a system of free expression that is open and inclusive, that broadens and elevates public discourse, and that fosters creativity, accountability, and effective self-government. Working closely with the client’s senior leadership team, I led the design of a 30-page, perfect-bound Case Statement for Donor Support booklet. It conceptually combined the urgency of activist zine aesthetics with tech-oriented type and colors for an exciting take on the Institute's foundational activities. It features custom collage illustrations from renowned artist Mike McQuade that abstractly represent the themes of their work using a strong central photograph, graphic ephemera, news headlines, nodes, and various other elements. Each section includes smaller inset pages that allow the reader to take a deeper dive into content while being surrounded by the graphic ideas of the larger theme. Typefaces range from functional to overtly digital in reference, and are juxtaposed together in headings and quotes to communicate the unique, contemporary intellectual space that the Institute inhabits.
